Yesterday I received my copy of Irata’s self titled debut album. I’m impressed, very impressed. Not only are they good musicians writing good music, they are doing a great job of self promoting. Go to their site to see what I mean, you can stream the whole album from the site. Order a copy of the CD and you’ll get with it two stickers a small pin and personal service, all for 10 bucks, including shipping. Pretty damn awesome.

They are a progressive instrumental three piece. I’ve always dug instrumental, it’s something hard to do well, tell a story without words. With track titles like Infinite 8, Clown Rehab, Baby’s Breath and Drunken Dwarf, these are interesting stories, well told in a sonic landscape I’ve never experienced before.

If you like music, check them out here.

Will the recording industry survive the current P2P epidemic? I hope not, I hate the idea of some aging psychedelic-hipster record executive sitting in plush surroundings, getting fat/stoned off my hard earned dough. Support the artists? Absolutely. I say the successful business models will somehow create a direct link between the artists and the music fans, There are many attempts thus far, social networking sites do a pretty good job, LastFM and the like seem somewhat successful. Today I came across Jamendo – free legal downloads, granted the site has been around awhile and poorly executed, but it’s still a nifty idea. All the music is released under Creative Commons.

To give you a taste, the site allows embedded albums or playlists. Here’s an artist I probably wouldn’t have heard of if it were not for the level playing field we call the interwebs.

I like Dub, what can I say?

For my two cents, if the recording industry were smart, they would form a conglomerate online record store with reasonably priced multiple format downloads (DRM free), CD, vinyl and merchandise sales. Possibly creating the worlds greatest record store in the process. But I’m not in a drug induced haze so what do I know?
